Installation of FTTH equipment.

The installation of FTTH equipment usually means the installation of optical line terminal (OLT) in the service center and the installation of optical network unit (ONU). Installation requirement of OLT is the same with that of other equipment in the service center. It’s important to note that FTTH involves cooperation with non-telecommunications business provider, so when installation of these equipment must also comply with their standards. ONU can be installed at user’s gate. It’s better that the fiber optic cable for ftth threads along existing tubes inside user’s walls. It’s both time-saving and cost-saving and avoids influence on the layout of user’s house. For the vast majority of users, ONU is best installed at the multimedia terminal box inside their houses.

In case of installing ONU inside user’s houses, the installation of ONU must be located at sites that is easy for cabling and access of other business, and can not be reached by children. The installation should cater to the layout and decoration of the user’s house. For new buildings it’s better, that they are pre-installed with necessary tubes or pipes for cabling.

The application of ONU in ftth network is recommended to be powered independently which guarantee the operation of voice business during cut-off of user’s power supply. For FTTO network, local power protection system is recommended.

An important source required for the installation of FTTH equipment is space. In implementing ftth projects, the installation space for OLT, ODF in service center and user’s end and FTTH termination box. We will introduce the installation of EPON OLT in China’s FTTH projects and the start-up and commissioning work.

OLT can be divided into two types by its structure. One is a stand-along equipment that features small capacity, compact size. The other is frame/service board type. The former is simple in installation, but difficult in expansion, while the latter is relatively complex in installation, the capacity expansion can be easily achieved by adding service boards. The selection of the two shall be decided according to the number of users.

1. Preparation of installation.

1) General safety instruction. Before opening cabinets, all power supply shall be cut off and all power cables shall be unplugged. The cabinets shall be kept clear and dustless. Avoid placing OLT cabinet and installation tools in aisle.

2) Electrical Safety. Double check and see whether electrical danger exists in working areas, for example, non-grounding or unreliable grounding, wet ground etc.. Before installation, installers shall keep in mind the location of emergency power switch, so that power can be cut in shortest time during emergent situation. All power cable and outer cable shall be unplugged before moving the cabinet. Try to avoid doing maintenance alone. Dont place OLT equipment in wet area, in case that liquid may enter the OLT.

3) Anti-static wrist. To avoid static electricitys damage on OLT equipment, installers must wear anti-static wrist when installing OLT equipment as well as OLT parts.

4) Laser safety. EPON equipment has optical interfaces. When they work, they emit strong laser. Dont look straight at them. They can hurt your retina.

5) Installation area. EPON equipment must be installed indoor. To ensure stable operation and extend its lifespan, the installation area must meet following requirements:

A. Temperature/Humidity: The area shall have right temperature and humidity so that the OLT equipment can work properly.

B. Cleanliness:the dust in the room shall not exceed 3*10-4 particles/m3, particle diameter shall not exceed 0.5μm, and the room is free from harmful gas like SO2 and H2S

C. Static proof: the area shall have effective measures to avoid static power.

D. Grounding: Installation area shall provide good grounding accessibility for equipment.

E. Power supply: OLT: 48V DC or 100/220V AC; ONU:120/240V AC.

2. Installation.

1) OLT equipment on standard cabinet

Step 1: make sure the cabinet is well installed, the position for OLT fixing inside the cabinet is ready, and that there no obstacles that influence the installation.

Step 2: Install mounting ear onto the equipment.

Step 3: Install the equipment into the right place.

Step 4: Fix the equipment into the cabinet.

2) Connection of Grounding wire. Grounding wire is very important for guarantee the safety of both installers and the equipment. The ground resistance of the OLT equipment should be less than 1 Ω.

If OLT equipment is powered by AC, the AC powers protecting earth wire can be used to protect the equipment. The protecting earth wire must be well grounded at power switch room or power transformer.

If OLT equipment is powered by DC, RTN wire can be used to ground the equipment. The RTN wire must be well grounded at the DC output interface of the power cabinet.

3) Installation of OLT PON module. PON module of OLT should support live plug.

Step 1: put on static-proof wrist, and make sure its well grounded, then take out the PON module from the package.

Step 2: Loose the screw of the protection board and take off the board.

Step 3: Face up the PON module, and push the module into the optical module port.

Step 4: Fasten the installing screw of the module. Fix the module.

4) Connection of the interface cable

A. Connection of configuration port cable. The configuration cable is a 4 core power cable, with crimped RJ-11 connector on one end and DB-9 female plug on the other end for console interface on OLT equipment. The DB-9 female plug can be connected with the 9-pin serial socket on terminal configuration device.

The connection of the configuration cable follows below steps.

Step 1: Connect the DB-9 female plug to the 9-pin serial socket on the PC or other terminal that configures the OLT equipment.

Step 2: Connect the RJ-11 to the console on the OLT equipment.

B. Connection of interface cable (Twisted Cat5 cable).The 10Base-T/100Base-T and 1000Base-T ports are terminated with RJ-45 connector. The port supports MDI/MDIX adaptive.

The connection of the interface cable follows below steps.

Step 1: Connect one end to the RJ-45 port for Ethernet.

Step 2: Connect the other end to the RJ-45 port on the device.

C. Connection of optical patch cable. When using optical patch cable, the optical connector type and optical fiber type must cater to the adaptor. Adaptor is an indispensable passive part. It makes detachable connection on optical channels possible, which not only simplifies the debugging, testing and maintenance of optical system, but also make it more flexible for scheduling and switching of optical systems. There are already many types of optical adaptor on the market.

The connection of optical patch cable follows below steps:

Step 1: take off the dust cap of the patch cord and clean the cross section of optical fiber.

Step 2: take off the duct cap of the adaptor, and plug patch cord into the adaptor.

Step 3: connect the other end with device.

D. The connection of optical splitter will be introduce in next article.

E. Double checking after connection. Double check below items after connection and make sure all of them works well.

Static proof wrist, configuration power cable, earth wire, power cable, device host, module, fans.

Note: make sure power is cut off before checking in case of harm on installers or damage on device due to wrong connection.

3. System debugging

1) Set up configuration environment

A. Requirement on configuration environment. Terminal (E.G. a PC) is connected to Console interface on OLT equipment by Configuration interface cable.

B. Connection of configuration interface cable.

Step 1: connect the DB-9 female plug on the configuration interface cable to the 9-pin serial socket on the PC that configures OLT equipment.

Step 2: Connect the RJ-11 of the cable to the Console interface on the OLT.

C. Set up parameters. Log in EPON device with super terminal or other terminal program. Parameters can be set following the instruction book.

2) Power on

A. Double check before power on. Before power is on, double check on all devices to ensure they are well fixed, all modules are correctly installed, all connections are correct, power voltage caters to the requirement of devices or equipment and that configuration device, PC or other terminal, is on with all parameters set.

Note:Keep in mind the location of the power switch of the room when turn on the power.

B. When turn on the device, first turn on the power switch for the device and then turn on the device.

C. Once power is on, its recommended to do following work:

First, check whether air flows out of vents.

Second, see whether all index lights work properly on the control panel.
